Are you having trouble getting a Band 7 or 8 on the IELTS Speaking test? Most students don't fail because their English is bad; they fail because they don't have a clear plan and don't practice enough.
I've been an ESL teacher for more than ten years, so I know what works. You don't need a whole year to get ready; you need a 30-day plan. This is your weekly guide to passing the IELTS Speaking test.
Week 1: The Diagnostic Phase (Getting to Know the Criteria)
You need to know how you will be graded before you practice. The examiner checks four things: fluency, vocabulary, grammatical range, and pronunciation.
Action Step: Record yourself answering common questions from Part 1. Pay attention to your "Umms" and "Ahhs."
The Pro Tool: I suggest using ELSA Speak to quickly fix your pronunciation. Its AI will look at your accent and tell you exactly which sounds are making your score go down.
Goal: Find out what your weakest area is (Is it grammar? Is it self-confidence?
Week 2: Expanding on the topic and learning new words
You will have to write about things like the environment, technology, and education on the IELTS test. You need more than just big words; you need "collocations," or words that naturally go together.
Action Step: Make "Word Trees" for the 10 most important IELTS topics. Learn to say "exceptionally beneficial" instead of "very good."
Tip for practice: Don't try to memorize entire scripts. Examiners don't like "robot" answers. Pay attention to "linking words," such as "furthermore," "consequently," and "on the other hand."
Week 3: Mock Exams in Real Time (The Most Important Phase)
This is where 90% of students fail: they don't practice with real people. You need to act like you're under "Exam Pressure."
The Quick Way to Success: You need a native speaker to help you fix your mistakes as you make them.
Use Cambly to practice quickly. There are tutors available all day, every day. Ask them to do a "Full Mock Interview" with you.
Use iTalki to get expert advice. Look for teachers who are "IELTS Specialists" or have worked as examiners in the past. They will tell you what needs to be fixed and give you a rough idea of your Band Score.
This week, you need to do at least five full practice interviews.
Week 4: Polish and Managing Performance
The last week is all about confidence and Part 2, which is called "The Long Turn." You have to be able to talk for two minutes without stopping.
Step: Use the "PPF Technique," which stands for "Past, Present, Future." If the examiner asks about your hobby, tell them how you used to do it, what you do now, and what you plan to do with it in the future. This shows how well you know grammar.
Last piece of advice: Stay calm and get enough sleep. Your "Fluency" score is based on how calm you sound.
